If your loved one has prostate cancer

If the man you love has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer, he may very well be surprised and concerned.

He may be surprised -- because prostate cancer is often diagnosed by screening rather than by symptoms. Many men are otherwise healthy and have no symptoms, so such a surprising diagnosis can be psychologically difficult. On the bright side, many cancers diagnosed by screening are in an early stage, when treatment has the best chance of cure with the lowest likelihood of side effects.

He may be concerned because prostate cancer and its treatment can cause changes in the very things that are at the core of being a man. The man you love will need your support and understanding. It is important to bear in mind that while urinary or sexual problems can occur, treatment for them is available.
