Prostate Cancer Screening

Prostate cancer screening consists of a digital rectal exam (DRE) and a blood test called PSA, which measures a substance called prostate specific antigen. Screening should be performed once a year and should start at age 50 for most men. In African American men and in men with a family history of prostate cancer, screening should begin at age 40. If the results of the DRE or PSA test are abnormal, a prostate biopsy is performed.
